In recent years Matt has been intensely pursuing several forms of historical, western martial arts for conversion to stage. Some of these include tomahawk, bowie knife, German and Italian longsword, Spanish side sword and Scottish backsword. With help from Western Martial Artists, Matt is at the forefront and cutting edge of a renaissance in how we approach and present theatrical fighting.

He has spend over 2 decades in the studying, practicing and refining the art form of Stage Combat. Since training at Theatre Humber, pursuing the art of theatrical and historical combat has been a great passion. He has travelled to train with experts from all over the world, including instructors from Scotland, England, Australia and all over the USA and Canada. He has performed and choreographed hundreds of fights over the years with just about every weapon imaginable; from the conventional swords in many Shakespeare plays to shards of porcelain and fireplace pokers in murder mysteries. His teaching talents are appreciated in the International stage combat community, having taught at the International Paddy Crean Art of the Sword workshop. In addition, he has taught “Introduction to Stage Combat” to hundreds of students of all ages, from children to seasoned professional actors.
