We’d love to see you at the upcoming PD day workshop for teachers that we are presenting in Guelph on December 3, 2015!
Stage combat is a useful skill set to introduce to high school students. The art form requires intense communication between partners, specific movement and timing, and attention to detail. In every class we visit there are students how engaged the students are, how much fun they’ve had, and how much they’ve learned.
As you may already know, stage combat is a growing and ever-developing art form. Burning Mountain specializes in teaching youth, in addition to being professional actors and fight directors. As stage combat develops, so too do our teaching methods, and we’re looking forward to sharing this information with you.
The PD Day workshop for teachers will be similar to the workshops that we provide in-class for students, with a few bonuses for you. Participate as much or as little as you like. Our goal is to present the information, and then can choose to what extent you would like to include this in your classroom.
First, we’ll cover the foundation safety features with example techniques for each feature. You’ll then have the opportunity to combine 3 or 4 of them into a short sequence, which will be fight directed by us. This is to give a sense of how the features and techniques are used in context.
Next, the direction of this workshop will diverge from our usual in-class sessions: we’ll have a brief discussion about different ways that teachers choose to integrate stage combat and professional fight directors/instructors into their classroom: from a short introductory demonstration; to longer workshops (4 classes or more) which are then integrated into other units in the school year. This will also include sample class plans, and examples for how to evaluate the students’ progress.
Our goal is that you’ll have a clearer idea about how to integrate a visit from a professional fight director/instructor into your class, and you may even feel confident enough with the foundations to teach some of the basics yourself.
It will be our pleasure to introduce or refresh your knowledge of stage combat.
